Context of Mark 13:31
29In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that his return is very near, right at the door. 30I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene before all these things take place. Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear. 32“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. 33And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!

Commentaries on Mark 13:31
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-37Verses 28-37 We have the application of this prophetic sermon. As to the destruction of Jerusalem, expect it to come very shortly. As to the end of the world, do not inquire when it will come, for of that day and that hour knoweth no man. Christ, as God, could not be ignorant of anything; but the Divine wisdom which dwelt in our Saviour, communicated itself to his human soul according to the Divine pleasure. As to both, our duty is to watch and pray. Our…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31Jesus personally guaranteed what he had said. My words include what Jesus said in Mark 13:1–37. Mark’s audience would have understood this as guaranteeing the truth of all the teachings of Jesus known to them (Luke 1:2). Like the Old Testament Scriptures (see Isa 40:8), the words of Jesus are eternal. His teachings are more permanent than the basic parts of creation itself. The basic elements of creation will pass away (see also Ps 102:25–26; Isa 40:6–8…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3131. Heaven and earth shall pass away; but my words shall not pass away--the strongest possible expression of the divine authority by which He spake; not as Moses or Paul might have said of their own inspiration, for such language would be unsuitable in any merely human mouth. Warnings to Prepare for the Coming of Christ Suggested by the Foregoing Prophecy (Mr 13:32-37). It will be observed that, in the foregoing prophecy, as our Lord approaches the crisis…Read the comment
