Context of Luke 9:16
14For there were about 5,000 men there. Jesus replied, “Tell them to sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15So the people all sat down. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. 17They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers! 18One day Jesus left the crowds to pray alone. Only his disciples were with him, and he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

Commentaries on Luke 9:16
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Then he took the five loaves - A minister of the Gospel, who is employed to feed souls, should imitate this conduct of Christ: He ought to exhort the people to hear with sedate and humble reverence. He should first take the bread of life himself, that he may be strengthened to feed others. He ought frequently to lift his soul to God, in order to draw down the Divine blessing on himself and his hearers. He should break the loaves - divide rightly the word…Read the comment
