Context of Jude 1:1
This letter is from Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and a brother of James. I am writing to all who have been called by God the Father, who loves you and keeps you safe in the care of Jesus Christ. 2May God give you more and more mercy, peace, and love. 3Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people.

Commentaries on Jude 1:1
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ - Probably Jude the apostle, who was surnamed Thaddeus and Lebbeus, was son to Alpheus, and brother to James the less, Joses, and Simon. See Matthew 10:3, and collate with Luke 6:16; Matthew 13:55. Brother of James - Supposed to be James the less, bishop of Jerusalem, mentioned here, because he was an eminent person in the Church. See the preface to St. James. To them that are sanctified by God - Instead of ̔, to the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ - If the view taken in the Introduction to the Epistle is correct, Jude sustained a near relation to the Lord Jesus, being, as James was, “the Lord‘s brother,” Galatians 1:19. The reasons why he did not advert to this fact here, as an appellation which would serve to designate him, and as showing his authority to address others in the manner in which he proposed to do in this Epistle, probably were, (1)that the right to…Read the comment

(1-4) The danger of being infected by false professors, and the dreadful punishment which shall be inflicted on them and their followers. (5-7) An awful description of these seducers and their deplorable end. (8-16) Believers cautioned against being surprised at such deceivers arising among them. (17-23) The epistle ends with an encouraging doxology, or words of praise. (24-25) Verses 1-4 Christians are…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1Jude (or Judas) is the Greek version of the Hebrew name “Judah.” It was a common name. This Jude was a brother of James, who was also a brother of Jesus (see Jude Book Introduction, “Author”). a servant of Jesus Christ: Jude states he follows Jesus in all parts of life. This title also shows honor. Important leaders in the Old Testament were called slaves or servants of God (see Joshua 14:7; 2 Kings 18:12; Ezekiel 34:23). To those who are called: We do…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1Author.--He calls himself in the address "the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James." See Introduction to the Epistle of James, in proof of James the apostle, and James the Lord's brother, the bishop of Jerusalem, being one and the same person. Ga 1:19 alone seems to me to prove this. Similarly, Jude the brother of our Lord, and Jude the apostle, seem to be one and the same. Jerome [Against Helvidius], rightly maintains that by the Lord's brethren…Read the comment
