Context of John 19:18
16Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away. 17Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha). There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them. 19And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18None of the writers of the Gospels focus on the details of being nailed to the cross because people already knew it was horrible. The soldiers used the cross as a tool for torture. They wanted victims to live for a while, sometimes for days. Because the Sabbath would begin when the sun set, they sped up the crucifixion of Jesus (19:31). Jesus had been severely beaten with whips tipped with stone or metal, so his back was deeply cut, and he was bleeding…Read the comment

But in this, as in many other of their doings, "the scripture was fulfilled, which saith (Is 53:12), And he was numbered with the transgressors"--(Mr 15:28)--though the prediction reaches deeper.
