24And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Commentaries on Acts 1:26

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26They gave forth their lots - In what manner this or any other question was decided by lot, we cannot precisely say. The most simple form was to put two stones, pieces of board, metal, or slips of parchment, with the names of the persons inscribed on them, into an urn; and after prayer, sacrifice, etc., to put in the hand and draw out one of the lots, and then the case was decided. I have considered this subject at large on Leviticus 16:8, Leviticus 16:9…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26And they gave forth their lots - Some have supposed that this means they voted. But to this interpretation there are insuperable objections: 1.The word “lots,” ́ klērousis not used to express votes, or suffrage. 2.The expression “the lot fell upon” is not consistent with the notion of voting. It is commonly expressive of casting lots. 3.Casting lots was common among the Jews on important and difficult occasions, and it was natural that the apostles…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-26Verses 15-26 The great thing the apostles were to attest to the world, was, Christ's resurrection; for that was the great proof of his being the Messiah, and the foundation of our hope in him. The apostles were ordained, not to wordly dignity and dominion, but to preach Christ, and the power of his resurrection. An appeal was made to God; "Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men," which we do not; and better than they know their own. It is fit that…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-26With prayer and humble dependence on God that he would reveal his will, the apostles cast lots (1:14, 24). This was a traditional way to discover God’s will (see Leviticus 16:8; Numbers 27:21; Deuteronomy 33:8; Joshua 14:2; 18:3–10; Proverbs 16:33). God chose Matthias by lot to replace Judas. After Pentecost, the Holy Spirit guided the followers of Jesus through dreams, visions, and prophecies instead of through lots (compare Acts 2:17–18; 13:2; 16:7–10)…Read the comment
