Context of Acts 27:33
31Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved.” 32Then the soldiers cut the ropes of the ship’s boat and let it drift away. As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day you have been in suspense and have gone without food; you have eaten nothing. 34Therefore I urge you to take some food, for this is important for your survival. For not one of you will lose a hair from his head.” 35After he said this, Paul took bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it, and began to eat.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 33While the day was coining on - It was then apparently about day-break. This day is the fourteenth day that ye have - continued fasting - Ye have not had one regular meal for these fourteen days past. Indeed we may take it for granted that, during the whole of the storm, very little was eaten by any man: for what appetite could men have for food, who every moment had death before their eyes?Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33And while the day was coming on - At daybreak. It was before they had sufficient light to discern what they should do. To take meat - Food. The word “meat” was formerly used to denote “food” of any kind. That ye have tarried - That you have remained or been fasting. Having taken nothing - No regular meal. It cannot mean that they had lived entirely without food, but that they had been in so much danger, were so constantly engaged, and had been so anxious…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-38Verses 30-38 God, who appointed the end, that they should be saved, appointed the means, that they should be saved by the help of these shipmen. Duty is ours, events are God's; we do not trust God, but tempt him, when we say we put ourselves under his protection, if we do not use proper means, such as are within our power, for our safety. But how selfish are men in general, often even ready to seek their own safety by the destruction of others! Happy…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33-35Paul acts like a true leader. He personally evaluates a dangerous situation, decides on a plan, and guides others to solve the problem (compare Nehemiah 1–3; contrast with Jonah 1). Paul’s positive example and strong faith in God encouraged the others to eat and remain hopeful (Acts 27:22–25).Read the comment

Paul--now looked up to by all the passengers as the man to direct them. besought them all to take meat--"partake of a meal." saying, This is the fourteenth day ye have tarried--"waited for a breathing time." having eaten nothing--that is, taken no regular meal…Read the comment
