12The citizens of that kingdom will be thrown outside into the darkness. People will cry and be in extreme pain there.” 13Jesus told the officer, “Go! What you believed will be done for you.” And at that moment the servant was healed. When Jesus went to Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law in bed with a fever. 15Jesus touched her hand, and the fever went away. So she got up and prepared a meal for him. 16In the evening the people brought him many who were possessed by demons. He forced the ⌞evil⌟ spirits out of people with a command and cured everyone who was sick.

Commentaries on Matthew 8:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Peter's house - That Peter lived at Capernaum, and that Christ lodged with him, is fully evident from this verse compared with Matthew 17:24. Peter's - wife's mother - Learn hence, says Theophylact, that marriage is no hinderance to virtue, since the chief of the apostles had his wife. Marriage is one of the first of Divine institutions, and is a positive command of God. He says, the state of celibacy is not Good, Genesis 2:18. Those who pretend to say…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14This account is contained also in Mark 1:29-31, and Luke 4:38-41. Mark says that Simon and Andrew lived together, and that James and John went with them to the house. He adds, also, that before the miracle they spake to him about the sick person. The miracle was direct and complete. She that had been sick was so completely restored as to attend to them and minister to them. The mention of “Peter‘s wife‘s mother” proves that Peter either then was or had…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-17Verses 14-17 Peter had a wife, yet was an apostle of Christ, who showed that he approved of the married state, by being thus kind to Peter's wife's relations. The church of Rome, which forbids ministers to marry, goes contrary to that apostle upon whom they rest so much. He had his wife's mother with him in his family, which is an example to be kind to our relations. In spiritual healing, the Scripture speaks the word, the Spirit gives the touch, touches…Read the comment

This included: non-Jewish people, lepers, blind people, sick women, people possessed by demons, tax collectors, those with long-term bleeding, and the dead. Jesus showed compassion to people in need. But the religious leaders reacted with anger and opposition. Jesus called his followers to respond…Read the comment
