Context of Matthew 8:14
12But other people who think that God's kingdom belongs to them will not be there. God's angels will throw them into the dark places that are far away from God. There those people will weep very much. They will bite their teeth together.’ 13Then Jesus said to the officer, ‘Go home. You believed that I would make your servant well again. So I will do it for you.’ At that moment, the servant did become well again. Jesus went into Peter's house. There, he saw the mother of Peter's wife. She was lying in bed. She was ill and her body was very hot. 15Jesus touched her hand and immediately she was well again. So she got up and she prepared food for Jesus. 16That evening, people brought to Jesus many people who were ill. Many of them had bad spirits in them. Jesus spoke a word so that the bad spirits left them. He made everybody who was ill well again.

Commentaries on Matthew 8:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Peter's house - That Peter lived at Capernaum, and that Christ lodged with him, is fully evident from this verse compared with Matthew 17:24. Peter's - wife's mother - Learn hence, says Theophylact, that marriage is no hinderance to virtue, since the chief of the apostles had his wife. Marriage is one of the first of Divine institutions, and is a positive command of God. He says, the state of celibacy is not Good, Genesis 2:18. Those who pretend to say…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14This account is contained also in Mark 1:29-31, and Luke 4:38-41. Mark says that Simon and Andrew lived together, and that James and John went with them to the house. He adds, also, that before the miracle they spake to him about the sick person. The miracle was direct and complete. She that had been sick was so completely restored as to attend to them and minister to them. The mention of “Peter‘s wife‘s mother” proves that Peter either then was or had…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-17Verses 14-17 Peter had a wife, yet was an apostle of Christ, who showed that he approved of the married state, by being thus kind to Peter's wife's relations. The church of Rome, which forbids ministers to marry, goes contrary to that apostle upon whom they rest so much. He had his wife's mother with him in his family, which is an example to be kind to our relations. This included: non-Jewish people, lepers, blind people, sick women, people possessed by demons, tax collectors, those with long-term bleeding, and the dead. Jesus showed compassion to people in need. But the religious leaders reacted with anger and opposition. Jesus called his followers to respond…Read the comment
