Context of Matthew 7:24
22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name? Didn’t we force out demons and do many miracles by the power and authority of your name?’ 23Then I will tell them publicly, ‘I’ve never known you. Get away from me, you evil people.’ “Therefore, everyone who hears what I say and obeys it will be like a wise person who built a house on rock. 25Rain poured, and floods came. Winds blew and beat against that house. But it did not collapse, because its foundation was on rock. 26“Everyone who hears what I say but doesn’t obey it will be like a foolish person who built a house on sand.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine - That is, the excellent doctrines laid down before in this and the two preceding chapters. There are several parables or similitudes like to this in the rabbins. I shall quote but the two following: - Rabbi Eleasar said, "The man whose knowledge exceeds his works, to whom is he like? - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24-27Verses 24-27 Jesus closes the sermon on the mount by a beautiful comparison, illustrating the benefit of attending to his words. Let us take heed of resting in outward privileges and doings, lest we deceive ourselves, and perish eternally, as multitudes do, with a lie in our right hand. Let every…Read the comment
