Commentaries on Matthew 25:18
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Digged in the earth - This represents the conduct of those who neglect the abilities that God has given, and fail to do what he has required. This is done often: 1.On the plea that they do not occupy a high station. 2.That they have slender abilities, and can do little good. 3.As it was in this case, that God had not given them as much as he did others, and they will therefore do nothing. These pleas are without foundation; because: 1.God does not…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 Christ keeps no servants to be idle: they have received their all from him, and have nothing they can call their own but sin. Our receiving from Christ is in order to our working for him. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. The day of account comes at last. We must all be reckoned with as to what good we have got to our own souls, and have done to others, by the advantages we have enjoyed. It is not meant…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-30This parable teaches that the Lord expects his servants to be faithful to the task given to them while waiting for his return. The delay of Christ’s return will cause some to do evil things (Matthew 24:48–49), some to become inactive (25:3), and others may become fearfully passive (25:18).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money--not misspending, but simply making no use of it. Nay, his action seems that of one anxious that the gift should not be misused or lost, but ready to be returned, just as he got it.Read the comment
