Context of Matthew 17:16
14When they came to a crowd, a man came up to Jesus, knelt in front of him, 15and said, “Sir, have mercy on my son. He suffers from seizures. Often he falls into fire or water. I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t cure him.” 17Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and corrupt generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me!” 18Jesus ordered the demon to come out of the boy. At that moment the boy was cured.

A spiritual disorder must have a spiritual remedy: natural means, in such cases, signify just - nothing.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16And I brought him to thy disciples - That is, not to the apostles, for they had power over unclean spirits Matthew 10:8, but to others of his followers who attempted to work miracles. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-21Verses 14-21 The case of afflicted children should be presented to God by faithful and fervent prayer. Christ cured the child. Though the people were perverse, and Christ was provoked, yet care was taken of the child. When all other helps and succours fail, we are welcome to Christ, may trust in him, and in his power and goodness. See here an emblem of Christ's undertaking as our Redeemer.
