Context of Matthew 16:14

12Then they understood that he didn’t say to watch out for the yeast in bread, but to watch out for the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptizer, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15He asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!”

Christ added that he had named him Peter, in allusion to his stability or firmness in professing the truth. The word translated "rock," is not…Read the comment

Others expected Elijah to return before the Messiah came (11:14; 17:10–12; Malachi 3:1; 4:5–6). Jeremiah or one of the prophets: Some thought Jesus was Jeremiah or another prophet. Certain Jews believed Jeremiah would rise again (see 2 Maccabees 15:13–16). Because Jesus spoke strongly on sensitive issues (Matthew 5:17; 15:1–20), some thought he was…Read the comment
