Context of Matthew 16:14
12Then the disciples understood what Jesus was talking about. They did not need to be careful about the yeast that they used in their bread. Instead, they must be careful about what the Pharisees and Sadducees were teaching. They must not accept it. 13Jesus went into the part of the country near Caesarea Philippi. While he was there, he asked his disciples, ‘When people talk about the Son of Man, who do they say that he is?’ They replied, ‘Some people say that you are John the Baptist. Other people say that you are Elijah. And some other people say that you are Jeremiah, or another prophet of God.’ 15‘But what do you think?’ Jesus asked them. ‘Who do you say that I am?’ 16Simon Peter answered him. ‘You are the Messiah. You are the Son of God, the God who lives for ever.’

One was situated on the borders of the Mediterranean (See the notes at Acts 8:40), and the other was the one mentioned here. This city was greatly enlarged and ornamented by Philip the tetrarch, son of Herod, and called Caesarea in honor of the Roman emperor, Tiberius Caesar. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-20Verses 13-20 Peter, for himself and his brethren, said that they were assured of our Lord's being the promised Messiah, the Son of the living God. Christ added that he had named him Peter, in allusion to his stability or firmness in professing the truth. The word translated "rock," is not…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14Some, like Herod Antipas, thought Jesus was John the Baptist raised from the dead (Matthew 14:1–2). Certain Jews believed Jeremiah would rise again (see 2 Maccabees 15:13–16). Because Jesus spoke strongly on sensitive issues (Matthew 5:17; 15:1–20), some thought he was…Read the comment
