Context of Mark 6:37
35When it was late, his disciples came to him. They said, “No one lives around here, and it’s already late. 36Send the people to the closest farms and villages to buy themselves something to eat.” Jesus replied, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “Should we go and spend about a year’s wages on bread to feed them?” 38He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they told him, “Five loaves of bread and two fish.” 39Then he ordered all of them to sit down in groups on the green grass.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 32-44Verses 32-44 See this narrative explained in the notes at Matthew 14:13-21. Mark 6:32 By ship - By a boat or a small vessel. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-44Verses 30-44 Let not ministers do any thing or teach any thing, but what they are willing should be told to their Lord. Christ notices the frights of some, and the toils of others of his disciples, and provides rest for those that are tired, and refuge for those that are terrified. The people sought the spiritual food of Christ's word, and then he took care that they should not want bodily food. If Christ and his disciples put up with mean things, surely…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 37Jesus suggests that, just as the disciples were able to drive out demons and heal through his power (6:7, 13, 30), they should be able to feed the crowd. Their reply shows that they were thinking only about what they could do on their own. They did not take into account the power of Jesus (his ability to act with God’s authority).Read the comment
