Context of Mark 12:37
35While Jesus was teaching in the temple courtyard, he asked, “How can the experts in Moses’ Teachings say that the Messiah is David’s son? 36David, guided by the Holy Spirit, said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Take the honored position—the one next to me [God the Father] on the heavenly throne— until I put your enemies under your control.” ’ David calls him Lord. So how can he be his son?” The large crowd enjoyed listening to him. 38As he taught, he said, “Watch out for the experts in Moses’ Teachings! They like to walk around in long robes, to be greeted in the marketplaces, 39and to have the front seats in synagogues and the places of honor at dinners.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 37The common people heard him gladly - And were doubtless many of them brought to believe and receive the truth. By the comparatively poor the Gospel is still best received.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35-37Verses 35-37 See the notes at Matthew 22:41-46. Mark 12:37 The common people heard him gladly - The success of the Saviour in his preaching was chiefly among the common or the poorer class of people. The rich and the mighty were too proud to listen to his instructions. So it is still. The main success of the gospel is there, and there it pours down its chief blessings. This is not the fault of “the gospel.” It would bless the rich and the mighty as well…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-40Verses 35-40 When we attend to what the Scriptures declare, as to the person and offices of Christ, we shall be led to confess him as our Lord and God; to obey him as our exalted Redeemer. If the common people hear these things gladly, while the learned and distinguished oppose, the former are happy, and the latter to be pitied. And as sin, disguised with a show of piety, is double iniquity, so its doom will be doubly heavy.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36-37Psalm 110:1 is the Old Testament verse most quoted in the New Testament. Since David wrote the psalm, the statement "The Lord [God] said to my [David’s] Lord [the Messiah]," shows that the Messiah is David’s Lord. So, the Messiah is not just David’s son. He is the Son of God and Man who sits at God’s right hand (Mark 14:62). He will come to judge the world (8:38; 13:24–27, 32–37).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3737. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son?--There is but one solution of this difficulty. Messiah is at once inferior to David as his son according to the flesh, and superior to him as the Lord of a kingdom of which David is himself a subject, not the sovereign. The human and divine natures of Christ, and the spirituality of His kingdom--of which the highest earthly sovereigns are honored if they be counted worthy to be…Read the comment
