Context of Luke 6:25
23Rejoice then, and be very happy! You have a great reward in heaven. That’s the way their ancestors treated the prophets. 24“But how horrible it will be for those who are rich. They have had their comfort. How horrible it will be for those who are well-fed. They will be hungry. How horrible it will be for those who are laughing. They will mourn and cry. 26How horrible it will be for you when everyone says nice things about you. That’s the way their ancestors treated the false prophets. 27“But I tell everyone who is listening: Love your enemies. Be kind to those who hate you.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20-49Verses 20-49 See this passage fully illustrated in the sermon on the mount, in Luke 6:21 That hunger now - Matthew has it, “that hunger and thirst after righteousness.” Matthew has expressed more fully what Luke has briefly, but there is no contradiction. Luke 6:24-26 These verses have been omitted by Matthew. They seem to have been spoken to the Pharisees. Who are rich - In this world‘s goods. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-26Verses 20-26 Here begins a discourse of Christ, most of which is also found in Mt 5; 7. But some think that this was preached at another time and place. All believers that take the precepts of the gospel to themselves, and live by them, may take the promises of the gospel to themselves, and live upon them. Woes are denounced against prosperous sinners as miserable people, though the world envies them. Those are blessed indeed whom Christ blesses, but…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 24-26Promises of blessing for the poor and oppressed are balanced in Luke with predictions of sorrow for the rich and powerful. Those who trust in themselves will be humbled, while those who depend on God will be blessed. The Old Testament prophets often pronounced woes against nations and rulers who oppressed God’s people and rejected his authority (for example, Isaiah 3:11; 5:8; Jeremiah 50:27; Zechariah 11:17).Read the comment
