Context of Luke 4:17
15He taught in the synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As usual he went into the synagogue on the day of rest—a holy day. He stood up to read the lesson. The attendant gave him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened it and found the place where it read: 18“The Spirit of the Lord is with me. He has anointed me to tell the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to announce forgiveness to the prisoners of sin and the restoring of sight to the blind, to forgive those who have been shattered by sin, 19to announce the year of the Lord’s favor.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17And when he had opened the book - , When he had unrolled it. The Sacred Writings used to this day, in all the Jewish synagogues, are written on skins of basil, parchment, or vellum, sewed end to end, and rolled on two rollers, beginning at each end; so that, in reading from right to left, they roll off with the left, while they roll on with the right. Probably the place in the Prophet Isaiah, here referred to, was the lesson for that day; and Jesus…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17There was delivered unto him - By the minister of the synagogue, or the keeper of the sacred books. They were kept in an “ark” or chest, not far from the pulpit, and the minister gave them to whomsoever he chose, to read them publicly. The book - The volume contained the prophecy of Isaiah. It would seem, from this, that the books were kept separate, and not united into one as with us. When he had opened the book - Literally, when he had “unrolled” the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 Christ taught in their synagogues, their places of public worship, where they met to read, expound, and apply the word, to pray and praise. All the gifts and graces of the Spirit were upon him and on him, without measure. By Christ, sinners may be loosed from the bonds of guilt, and by his Spirit and grace from the bondage of corruption. He came by the word of his gospel, to bring light to those that sat in the dark, and by the power of his…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-30The sermon Jesus gave in Nazareth showed what his whole public ministry would be about. He returned to the synagogue in his hometown to announce the good news that God’s salvation had come. The people were pleased at first. But then Jesus reminded them that God also reaches out to Gentiles, not only to Jews. This made the crowd so angry that they tried to kill him.Read the comment
