Context of Luke 4:17
15He taught people in the Jewish meeting places. Everyone said good things about him. 16Jesus went to Nazareth, the town where he had grown up. On the Jewish day of rest, he went to their meeting place. This was what he usually did. He stood up to read aloud from the Bible. They gave him the scroll that had the messages of God's prophet Isaiah. Jesus opened the scroll. He found the place where Isaiah wrote: 18‘The Spirit of the Lord God is on me. He has chosen me to tell good news to poor people. He has sent me to tell people who are in prison, “You can go free!” I must say to people that cannot see, “See again!” I must cause people that are like slaves to become free. 19I must tell everyone, “This is the year when God will be kind to his people.” ’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17And when he had opened the book - , When he had unrolled it. The Sacred Writings used to this day, in all the Jewish synagogues, are written on skins of basil, parchment, or vellum, sewed end to end, and rolled on two rollers, beginning at each end; so that, in reading from right to left, they roll off with the left, while they roll on with the right. Probably the place in the Prophet Isaiah, here referred to, was the lesson for that day; and Jesus…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17There was delivered unto him - By the minister of the synagogue, or the keeper of the sacred books. They were kept in an “ark” or chest, not far from the pulpit, and the minister gave them to whomsoever he chose, to read them publicly. The book - The volume contained the prophecy of Isaiah. It would seem, from this, that the books were kept separate, and not united into one as with us. When he had opened the book - Literally, when he had “unrolled” the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 Christ taught in their synagogues, their places of public worship, where they met to read, expound, and apply the word, to pray and praise. All the gifts and graces of the Spirit were upon him and on him, without measure. By Christ, sinners may be loosed from the bonds of guilt, and by his Spirit and grace from the bondage of corruption. He came by the word of his gospel, to bring light to those that sat in the dark, and by the power of his…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-30The sermon Jesus gave in Nazareth showed what his whole public ministry would be about. He returned to the synagogue in his hometown to announce the good news that God’s salvation had come. The people were pleased at first. But then Jesus reminded them that God also reaches out to Gentiles, not only to Jews. This made the crowd so angry that they tried to kill him.Read the comment
