Context of Luke 24:31
29They urged him, “Stay with us! It’s getting late, and the day is almost over.” So he went to stay with them. 30While he was at the table with them, he took bread and blessed it. He broke the bread and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. But he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, “Weren’t we excited when he talked with us on the road and opened up the meaning of the Scriptures for us?” 33That same hour they went back to Jerusalem. They found the eleven apostles and those who were with them gathered together.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 31Their eyes were opened - But we are not to imagine that he administered the holy eucharist at this time; there is not the most distant evidence of this. It was a mere family meal, and ended before it was well begun. They knew him - His acting as father of the family, in taking, blessing, and distributing the bread among them, caused them to recollect those lips which they had often heard speak, and those hands by which they had often been fed. Perhaps he…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 31Their eyes were opened - The obscurity was removed. They saw him to be the Messiah. Their doubts were gone, and they saw clearly that he was risen, and was truly, as they had long hoped, the Saviour of people. It is not meant that they were before “blind,” but that they did not know until then who he was. He vanished out of their sight - He suddenly departed. It does not appear that there was anything miraculous in this, but, during their surprise, he…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-35Verses 28-35 If we would have Christ dwell with us, we must be earnest with him. Those that have experienced the pleasure and profit of communion with him, cannot but desire more of his company. He took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. This he did with his usual authority and affection, with the same manner, perhaps with the same words. He here teaches us to crave a blessing on every meal. See how Christ by his Spirit and grace makes…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31Their eyes were opened: This is another example of the “divine passive” (a way of speaking that shows God is acting, even when he is not named; see study note on 24:16). God opened their eyes when Jesus broke the bread. This means they were finally able to recognize Jesus. and He disappeared from their sight: In his resurrected and transformed body, Jesus showed abilities he had not shown before the resurrection (see 24:36; 1 Corinthians 15:20–23, 35–57).Read the comment
