Context of Luke 4:30
28Everyone in the synagogue became furious when they heard this. 29Their city was built on a hill with a cliff. So they got up, forced Jesus out of the city, and led him to the cliff. They intended to throw him off of it. But Jesus walked right by them and went away. 31Jesus went to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and taught them on a day of rest—a holy day. 32The people were amazed at his teachings because he spoke with authority.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 30Passing through the midst of them - Either he shut their eyes so that they could not see him; or he so overawed them by his power as to leave them no strength to perform their murderous purpose. The man Christ Jesus was immortal till his time came; and all his messengers are immortal till their work is done. The following relation of a fact presents a scene something similar to what I suppose passed on this occasion: A missionary, who had been sent to a…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 30Passing through the midst of, them, went his way - This escape was very remarkable. It is remarkable that he should escape out of their hands when their very object was to destroy him, and that he should escape in so peaceful a manner, without violence or conflict. A similar case is recorded in John 8:59. There are but two ways of accounting for this: 1.That “other Nazarenes,” who had not been present in the synagogue, heard what was doing and came to…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 Christ taught in their synagogues, their places of public worship, where they met to read, expound, and apply the word, to pray and praise. All the gifts and graces of the Spirit were upon him and on him, without measure. By Christ, sinners may be loosed from the bonds of guilt, and by his Spirit and grace from the bondage of corruption. He came by the word of his gospel, to bring light to those that sat in the dark, and by the power of his…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30Jesus passed through the crowd: The main emphasis is on the royal status and authority of Jesus. His time had not yet come. His time had not yet come (compare John 7:30, 44; 8:20, 59). This attempt to kill Jesus pointed ahead to his crucifixion. His escape also points ahead to his resurrection.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3030. passing through the midst, &c.--evidently in a miraculous way, though perhaps quite noiselessly, leading them to wonder afterwards what spell could have come over them, that they allowed Him to escape.
