Context of Luke 24:31
29But they wanted him to stop there. They said to him, ‘Please stay in our home with us. It is getting late, and it will soon be night.’ So Jesus went into their house to stay with them. 30He sat down to eat with them. He took the bread and he thanked God for it. He broke it into pieces and he gave some to them. Their eyes became clear and they recognized him. But then he disappeared, and they could no longer see him. 32They said to each other, ‘When he talked to us, it was like a fire that was burning inside us. We felt it while we were walking along the road. We also felt it when he was explaining God's message in the Bible.’ 33Immediately they got up and they returned to Jerusalem. There they found the 11 apostles and other people who were with them.

Commentaries on Luke 24:31
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 31Their eyes were opened - But we are not to imagine that he administered the holy eucharist at this time; there is not the most distant evidence of this. It was a mere family meal, and ended before it was well begun. They knew him - His acting as father of the family, in taking, blessing, and distributing the bread among them, caused them to recollect those lips which they had often heard speak, and those hands by which they had often been fed. Perhaps he…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 31Their eyes were opened - The obscurity was removed. They saw him to be the Messiah. Their doubts were gone, and they saw clearly that he was risen, and was truly, as they had long hoped, the Saviour of people. It is not meant that they were before “blind,” but that they did not know until then who he was. He vanished out of their sight - He suddenly departed. It does not appear that there was anything miraculous in this, but, during their surprise, he…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-35Verses 28-35 If we would have Christ dwell with us, we must be earnest with him. Those that have experienced the pleasure and profit of communion with him, cannot but desire more of his company. He took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. This he did with his usual authority and affection, with the same manner, perhaps with the same words. He here teaches us to crave a blessing on every meal. See how Christ by his Spirit and grace makes…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31Their eyes were opened: This is another example of the “divine passive” (a way of speaking that shows God is acting, even when he is not named; see study note on 24:16). God opened their eyes when Jesus broke the bread. This means they were finally able to recognize Jesus. and He disappeared from their sight: In his resurrected and transformed body, Jesus showed abilities he had not shown before the resurrection (see 24:36; 1 Corinthians 15:20–23, 35–57).Read the comment
