Context of John 13:30
28No one at the table knew why Jesus said this to him. 29Judas had the moneybag. So some thought that Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the festival or to give something to the poor. Judas took the piece of bread and immediately went outside. It was night. 31When Judas was gone, Jesus said, “The Son of Man is now glorified, and because of him God is glorified. 32If God is glorified because of the Son of Man, God will glorify the Son of Man because of himself, and he will glorify the Son of Man at once.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-30Verses 18-30 Our Lord had often spoken of his own sufferings and death, without such trouble of spirit as he now discovered when he spake of Judas. The sins of Christians are the grief of Christ. We are not to confine our attention to Judas. The prophecy of his treachery may apply to all who partake of God's mercies, and meet them with ingratitude. See the infidel, who only looks at the Scriptures with a desire to do away their authority and destroy their…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30out into the night: This detail is more than a note about the time of day. It has symbolic meaning. Judas’s departure shows his spiritual condition. Darkness had taken hold of him completely (see study note on 13:2; compare 3:19). Jesus, the light of the world, is the opposite of the night.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 27-3027-30. after the sop Satan entered into him--Very solemn are these brief hints of the successive steps by which Judas reached the climax of his guilt. "The devil had already put it into his heart to betray his Lord." Yet who can tell what struggles he went through ere he brought himself to carry that suggestion into effect? Even after this, however, his compunctions were not at an end. With the thirty pieces of silver already in his possession, he seems…Read the comment
