Context of John 13:12
10Jesus told Peter, “People who have washed are completely clean. They need to have only their feet washed. All of you, except for one, are clean.” 11(Jesus knew who was going to betray him. That’s why he said, “All of you, except for one, are clean.”) After Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer clothes, he took his place at the table again. Then he asked his disciples, “Do you understand what I’ve done for you? 13You call me teacher and Lord, and you’re right because that’s what I am. 14So if I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you must wash each other’s feet.

Commentaries on John 13:12
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12Know ye what I have done - Our Lord had told Peter, in the presence of the rest, John 13:7, that he should afterwards know what was the intent and meaning of this washing; and now he begins to fulfill his promise; therefore I think it more likely that he gives a command, here, than asks a question, as he knew himself that they did not comprehend his design. On this account might be translated in the imperative mood, Consider what I have done.Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-38The setting is the final Passover meal of Jesus on Thursday evening. During this meal, Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus. John does not describe the meal itself like the Synoptic Gospels do (Matthew 26:17–29; Mark 14:12–25; Luke 22:7–20; see also 1 Corinthians 11:23–26). John focuses on other activities at the event, such as: the foot washing (John 13:1–17), Judas’s betrayal (13:18–30), and the prediction of Peter’s denials (13:31–38).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 12-1512-15. Know ye what I have done?--that is, its intent. The question, however, was put merely to summon their attention to His own answer.Read the comment
