Context of John 11:46
44The dead man came out. Strips of cloth were wound around his feet and hands, and his face was wrapped with a handkerchief. Jesus told them, “Free Lazarus, and let him go.” 45Many Jews who had visited Mary and had seen what Jesus had done believed in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council. They asked, “What are we doing? This man is performing a lot of miracles. 48If we let him continue what he’s doing, everyone will believe in him. Then the Romans will take away our position and our nation.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 46But some of them went their ways - Astonishing! Some that had seen even this miracle steeled their hearts against it; and not only so, but conspired the destruction of this most humane, amiable, and glorious Savior! Those who obstinately resist the truth of God are capable of every thing that is base, perfidious, and cruel.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 46Some of them - We see here the different effect which the word and works of God will have on different individuals. Some are converted and others are hardened; yet the evidence of this miracle was as clear to the one as the other. But they would not be convinced.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-46Verses 33-46 Christ's tender sympathy with these afflicted friends, appeared by the troubles of his spirit. In all the afflictions of believers he is afflicted. His concern for them was shown by his kind inquiry after the remains of his deceased friend. Being found in fashion as a man, he acts in the way and manner of the sons of men. It was shown by his tears. He was a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. Tears of compassion resemble those of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 45-46News of the miracle quickly spread to Jerusalem (12:9, 17). Again, people had different opinions about who Jesus was (6:66–69; 7:43; 9:16; 10:19; 11:37). Jesus was famous in Galilee for healing and raising the dead (see Matthew 9:24–26; 10:8; 11:5). Now he had brought this power to Judea.Read the comment

But some ... went ... to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done--the two classes which continually reappear in the Gospel history; nor is there ever any great work of God which does not produce both. "It is remarkable that on each of the three occasions on which our Lord raised the dead, a large number of persons was assembled.
