Context of Jeremiah 50:24
22The noise of battle and great destruction fills the land. 23The hammer of the whole earth is broken and shattered. See how desolate Babylon is of all the nations! I will set traps for you, Babylon. You will be caught, but you won’t know it. You will be found and captured because you have opposed the Lord. 25The Lord will open his armory and bring out the weapons of his fury, because the Almighty Lord of Armies has a job to do in the land of the Babylonians. 26Attack them from a distance, open their storehouses, pile up their corpses like piles of grain, claim them for me by destroying them, and don’t leave anyone behind.

Commentaries on Jeremiah 50:24
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24I have laid a snare for thee - It was not by storm that Cyrus took the city. The Euphrates ran through it; he dug a channel for the river in another direction, to divert its stream; he waited for that time in which the inhabitants had delivered themselves up to debauchery: in the dead of the night he turned off the stream, and he and his army entered by the old channel, now void of its waters. This was the snare of which the prophet here speaks. See…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24I have laid a snare for thee - Babylon, the impregnable, was taken (according to Herodotus) by Cyrus by stratagem. Having diverted the waters of the Euphrates, he entered the city by the river channel: but see Daniel 5:1 note. And thou wast not aware - Better literally, and thou didst not know it.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-32Verses 21-32 The forces are mustered and empowered to destroy Babylon. Let them do what God demands, and they shall bring to pass what he threatens. The pride of men's hearts sets God against them, and ripens them apace for ruin. Babylon's pride must be her ruin; she has been proud against the Holy One of Israel; who can keep those up whom God will throw down?Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2424. I--Thou hast to do with God, not merely with men. taken ... not aware--Herodotus relates that one half of the city was taken before those in the other half were "aware" of it. Cyrus turned the waters of the Euphrates where it was defended into a different channel, and so entered the city by the dried-up channel at night, by the upper and lower gates (Da 5:30, 31).Read the comment
