Context of Jeremiah 50:24
22There is a noise of war in the land of Babylonia. The enemy is destroying everything! 23Babylon attacked other nations of the world, like a hammer that breaks things into pieces. But now that hammer has broken into pieces. Now the other nations see that Babylon is a disgusting place. Babylon, I put a trap to catch you, and you did not know about it. Now I have caught you in my trap, because you fought against me. 25I have taken out my weapons from the place where I had stored them. I will use those weapons to punish the people of Babylonia, because I am very angry with them. I am the Lord God Almighty. I have work to do in the land of Babylonia. 26Now come from far away to attack Babylonia! Break open the store rooms and take out the grain. Knock down their buildings and break them into pieces. Completely destroy everything. Do not let anything remain!

Commentaries on Jeremiah 50:24
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24I have laid a snare for thee - It was not by storm that Cyrus took the city. The Euphrates ran through it; he dug a channel for the river in another direction, to divert its stream; he waited for that time in which the inhabitants had delivered themselves up to debauchery: in the dead of the night he turned off the stream, and he and his army entered by the old channel, now void of its waters. This was the snare of which the prophet here speaks. See…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24I have laid a snare for thee - Babylon, the impregnable, was taken (according to Herodotus) by Cyrus by stratagem. Having diverted the waters of the Euphrates, he entered the city by the river channel: but see Daniel 5:1 note. And thou wast not aware - Better literally, and thou didst not know it.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-32Verses 21-32 The forces are mustered and empowered to destroy Babylon. Let them do what God demands, and they shall bring to pass what he threatens. The pride of men's hearts sets God against them, and ripens them apace for ruin. Babylon's pride must be her ruin; she has been proud against the Holy One of Israel; who can keep those up whom God will throw down?Read the comment

I--Thou hast to do with God, not merely with men. taken ... not aware--Herodotus relates that one half of the city was taken before those in the other half were "aware" of it. Cyrus turned the waters of the Euphrates where it was defended into a different channel, and so entered the city by the dried-up channel at night, by the upper and lower gates (Da 5:30, 31).Read the comment
