Context of 2 Timothy 2:17
15Do your best to present yourself to God as a tried-and-true worker who isn’t ashamed to teach the word of truth correctly. 16Avoid pointless discussions. People who ⌞pay attention to these pointless discussions⌟ will become more ungodly, and what they say will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are like that. 18They have abandoned the truth. They are destroying the faith of others by saying that people who have died have already come back to life. 19In spite of all that, God’s ⌞people⌟ have a solid foundation. These words are engraved on it: “The Lord knows those who belong to him,” and “Whoever worships the Lord must give up doing wrong.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17Their word will eat as doth a canker - ̔ · As a gangrene; i.e. as a mortification in the flesh, where the circulation is entirely stopped, and putrefaction takes place, which continues to corrupt all the circumjacent flesh, spreading more and more till death takes place, unless stopped by a timely and judicious application of medicine. Such is the influence of false doctrine; it fixes its mortal seed in the soul, which continues to corrupt and assimilate…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-21Verses 14-21 Those disposed to strive, commonly strive about matters of small moment. But strifes of words destroy the things of God. The apostle mentions some who erred. They did not deny the resurrection, but they corrupted that true doctrine. Yet nothing can be so foolish or erroneous, but it will overturn the temporary faith of some professors. This foundation has two writings on it. One speaks our comfort. None can overthrow the faith of any whom God…Read the comment
