Context of Psalms 144:9
7Stretch out your hand from on high; rescue me and deliver me from the many waters, from the hand of foreigners, 8whose mouths speak lies and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood. I will sing a new song to you, O God; upon a ten-stringed harp I will play to you, 10who gives victory to kings, who rescues David his servant from the cruel sword. 11Rescue me and deliver me from the hand of foreigners, whose mouths speak lies and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9I will sing a new song unto thee, O God - There will be occasion in such a deliverance, or manifestation of mercy, for a new expression of praise. On the phrase, “a new song,” see the notes at Psalm 33:3. Upon a psaltery, and an instrument of ten strings - The word “and” should not have been inserted here. The idea is, “Upon a lyre or harp (Nebel) of ten strings, will I sing praise.” See the notes at Isaiah 5:12; and notes at Psalm 33:2.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-15Verses 9-15 Fresh favours call for fresh returns of thanks; we must praise God for the mercies we hope for by his promise, as well as those we have received by his providence. The public prosperity David desired for his people, is stated. It adds much to the comfort and happiness of parents in this…Read the comment

A new song (Psalm 144:9–10) and a prayer for rescue (144:11) introduce the theme of the Lord’s blessings through his care and protection (Psalm 144:12–15).Read the comment
