Context of Psalms 144:9
7Reach down from heaven and rescue me; rescue me from deep waters, from the power of my enemies. 8Their mouths are full of lies; they swear to tell the truth, but they lie instead. I will sing a new song to you, O God! I will sing your praises with a ten-stringed harp. 10For you grant victory to kings! You rescued your servant David from the fatal sword. 11Save me! Rescue me from the power of my enemies. Their mouths are full of lies; they swear to tell the truth, but they lie instead.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9I will sing a new song unto thee, O God - There will be occasion in such a deliverance, or manifestation of mercy, for a new expression of praise. On the phrase, “a new song,” see the notes at Psalm 33:3. Upon a psaltery, and an instrument of ten strings - The word “and” should not have been inserted here. The idea is, “Upon a lyre or harp (Nebel) of ten strings, will I sing praise.” See the notes at Isaiah 5:12; and notes at Psalm 33:2.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-15Verses 9-15 Fresh favours call for fresh returns of thanks; we must praise God for the mercies we hope for by his promise, as well as those we have received by his providence. To be saved from the hurtful sword, or from wasting sickness, without deliverance from the dominion of sin and the wrath to come, is but a small advantage. The public prosperity David desired for his people, is stated. It adds much to the comfort and happiness of parents in this…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-15This lament begins with an exclamation of love for the Lord. The community then reflects on the temporary nature of life (Psalm 144:3–4). The psalmist asks for God's help and anticipates victory (Psalm 144:5–11). A new song (Psalm 144:9–10) and a prayer for rescue (144:11) introduce the theme of the Lord’s blessings through his care and protection (Psalm 144:12–15).Read the comment
