Context of Mark 6:45

43And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray. 47And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.

Commentaries on Mark 6:45

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 45To the other side before unto Bethsaida - John says, John 6:17, to Capernaum. It is probable our Lord ordered them to steer to one or other of these two places, which were about four miles distant, and on the same side of the sea of Galilee.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45-56Verses 45-56 See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 14:22-36. Mark 6:52 They considered not the miracle of the loaves - They did not remember or call to mind the “power” which Jesus had shown in feeding the five thousand by a miracle, and that, having done that, he had power also to save them from the storm. Their heart was hardened - Their “mind” was dull to perceive it. This does not mean that they were “opposed” to Jesus, or that they had…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 45-56Verses 45-56 The church is often like a ship at sea, tossed with tempests, and not comforted: we may have Christ for us, yet wind and tide against us; but it is a comfort to Christ's disciples in a storm, that their Master is in the heavenly mount, interceding for them. And no difficulties can hinder Christ's appearance for his people, when the set time is come. He silenced their fears, by making himself known to them. Our fears are soon satisfied, if our…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 45-46The disciples went to Bethsaida, the hometown of Peter and Andrew (John 1:44). Meanwhile, Jesus dismissed the crowd and went away by himself to pray. Jesus regularly prayed (Mark 1:35). He also urged his disciples to pray (see 14:38).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4545. And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before--Him. unto Bethsaida--Bethsaida of Galilee (Joh 12:21). John (Joh 6:17) says they "went over the sea towards Capernaum"--the wind, probably, occasioning this slight deviation from the direction of Bethsaida. while he sent away the people--"the multitude." His object in this was to put an end to the misdirected excitement in His favor (Joh 6:15), into…Read the comment
