Context of Mark 13:14
12And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. "But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-23Verses 14-23 The Jews in rebelling against the Romans, and in persecuting the Christians, hastened their own ruin apace. Here we have a prediction of that ruin which came upon them within less than forty years after this. Such destruction and desolation, that the like cannot be found in any history. Promises of power to persevere, and cautions against falling away, well agree with each other. But the more we consider these things, the more we shall see…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14When you see the abomination of desolation: Mark did not explain what this object would be, but Jewish audiences in the first century were familiar with the term. The prophet Daniel had foretold that such an object would stand in the temple in Jerusalem (Daniel 9:27; 11:31). Many Jews understood the events in Jerusalem from 167 to 164 BC, during the time of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, to be a fulfillment of that prophecy. The deuterocanonical book of 1…Read the comment
