Context of Titus 2:1

But as for you, Titus, you must teach people to do what is right. Teach them only the things that belong to God's true message. 2Tell the older men to control themselves properly. They must think carefully about how they live, so that people respect them. They must continue to believe in Christ. They must continue to love other people. They must continue to be patient and strong. 3Also, tell the older women to live in a good way. Their lives must show that they respect God. They must not say bad things about other people. They must not be drunks. They must teach what is good.

Commentaries on Titus 2:1

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1But speak thou the things - This is a conclusion drawn from the preceding chapter: the Judaizing teachers not only taught a false doctrine, but they led an unholy life; Titus was to act directly opposite; he must teach a sacred doctrine, and the things which become it; he must proclaim the truth, and illustrate that truth. The people must not only be well instructed, but they must be holy in their lives. Principle and practice must go hand in hand.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1But speak thou - In thine own ministry. In the previous chapter he had given him instructions as to the kind of persons who were to be put into the sacred office. Here he gives him special instructions in regard to his own preaching. “The things which become sound doctrine.” To wit, those which he proceeds immediately to specify. On the phrase sound doctrine, see the notes at 1 Timothy 1:10; compare 2 Timothy 4:3.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1The duties which become sound doctrine. (1-8) Believing servants must be obedient. (9-10) All is enforced from the holy design of the gospel, which concerns all believers. (11-15) Verses 1-8 Old disciples of Christ must behave in every thing agreeably to the Christian doctrine. That the aged men be sober; not thinking that the decays of nature will justify any excess; but seeking comfort from nearer communion with God, not from any undue indulgence. Faith…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-15Sound teaching was especially urgent on account of the false teachers, who had caused problems within "entire households" (1:11). In 2:1–10, Paul addresses different groups within the household of faith, showing his concern for the public testimony of the church (2:5, 8, 10; see also 1 Tim 5:1–6:2). Paul then elaborates on the coming of Christ (Titus 2:11–14) before giving a direct charge to Titus (2:15).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-151. But ... thou--in contrast to the reprobate seducers stigmatized in Tit 1:11, 15, 16. "He deals more in exhortations, because those intent on useless questions needed chiefly to be recalled to the study of a holy, moral life; for nothing so effectually allays men's wandering curiosity, as the being brought to recognize those duties in which they ought to exercise themselves" [Calvin]. speak--without restraint: contrast Tit 1:11, "mouths ... stopped."…Read the comment
