Context of Matthew 8:23
21Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” As he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24And a great storm developed on the sea so that the waves began to swamp the boat. But he was asleep. 25So they came and woke him up saying, “Lord, save us! We are about to die!”

There were many other ships in company with him, Mark 4:36. This circumstance would render the miracle much more striking and impressive.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-27Verses 23-27 It is a comfort to those who go down to the sea in ships, and are often in perils there, to reflect that they have a Saviour to trust in and pray to, who knows what it is to be on the water, and to be in storms there. Those who are passing with Christ over the ocean of this world, must expect storms. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-27This story continues the theme of true discipleship. In the storm, the disciples had to trust Jesus with their very lives for safety and rescue.
