Context of Matthew 8:23
21Another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father (collect my inheritance).” 22But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me [believing in Me as Master and Teacher], and allow the [spiritually] dead to bury their own dead.” When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24And suddenly a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves; but Jesus was sleeping. 25And the disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us, we are going to die!”

There were many other ships in company with him, Mark 4:36. This circumstance would render the miracle much more striking and impressive.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-27Verses 23-27 It is a comfort to those who go down to the sea in ships, and are often in perils there, to reflect that they have a Saviour to trust in and pray to, who knows what it is to be on the water, and to be in storms there. Those who are passing with Christ over the ocean of this world, must expect storms. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-27This story continues the theme of true discipleship. In the storm, the disciples had to trust Jesus with their very lives for safety and rescue. Jesus showed that he even has authority over dangerous weather and the sea (see Job 38:8–11; Psalms 29; 65:1–13; 89:9; 107:23–32).Read the comment
