Context of Matthew 24:48
46That servant will be very happy when his master comes home. His master will see that he has done everything well. 47Yes, I tell you this: The master will give that servant authority to rule over everything in his house. But another servant might be bad. He might say to himself, “My master will not come yet.” 49Then he begins to hit the other servants. He eats too much and he drinks too much. He meets with other people who become drunk. 50Then the master of that servant will come home and he will surprise the servant. He did not think that his master would come home on that day or at that time.

Commentaries on Matthew 24:48
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 48But, and if that evil servant - Here are three characters of a bad minister. He has little or no faith in the speedy coming of Christ, either to punish for wickedness, or to pardon and sanctify those who believe. It may be, he does not outwardly profess this, but he says it in his heart, and God searches his heart, and knows that he professes to teach what he does not believe. He governs with an absolute dominion, oppressing his colleagues and doing…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45-51Verses 45-51 This passage is, in fact, “a parable,” though it is not expressly so called. The design is to show that his disciples should act as if they were each moment expecting his return. This he illustrates by the conduct of a servant who did not expect his master soon to return, who acted with great impropriety, and who was accordingly punished. Matthew 24:45 Who, then, is a faithful and wise servant - By the conduct of a faithful and wise servant…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 42-51Verses 42-51 To watch for Christ's coming, is to maintain that temper of mind which we would be willing that our Lord should find us in. We know we have but a little time to live, we cannot know that we have a long time to live; much less do we know the time fixed for the judgment. Our Lord's coming will be happy to those that shall be found ready, but very dreadful to those that are not. If a man, professing to be the servant of Christ, be an unbeliever…Read the comment
