Context of Mark 8:11
9About 4,000 people were there and ate the food. Then Jesus sent the people away. 10Immediately, he got into the boat with his disciples. They all returned to the part of the country called Dalmanutha. Some Pharisees came to Jesus. They began to argue with him. They wanted to see him do something powerful. That would show them that God had really sent him. 12Jesus cried with a low, sad sound. He said, ‘People who are alive today want God to show them something powerful. But I tell you this: God will not do the powerful thing for them that they want.’ 13Then Jesus left those Pharisees. He got back into the boat to go to the other side of the lake.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11-21Verses 11-21 See this passage explained in Matthew 16:1-12. Mark 8:12 Sighed deeply in his spirit - His heart was deeply affected at their wickedness and hypocrisy. The word “spirit” here is taken as the seat of the emotions, passions, affections. He drew groans deeply from his breast. No sign be given - That is, no such sign as they asked, to wit, a sign “from heaven.” He said a sign should be given, the same as was furnished by Jonas, Matthew 16:4. But…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-21Verses 11-21 Obstinate unbelief will have something to say, though ever so unreasonable. Christ refused to answer their demand. If they will not be convinced, they shall not. Alas! what cause we have to lament for those around us, who destroy themselves and others by their perverse and obstinate unbelief, and enmity to the gospel! When we forget the works of God, and distrust him, we should chide ourselves severely, as Christ here reproves his disciples…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11The Pharisees continued to oppose Jesus (2:16–18, 24; 3:6; 7:1–5; 10:2; 12:13, 15). Their hostility did not stop. Sometimes, asking for a sign is acceptable (Judges 6:36–40; 2 Kings 20:8–11; Isaiah 7:10–12; see also John 2:18–19). But in this case, their request was not sincere. It was a stubborn test of God (they were trying to challenge or trap him). They were not asking for the kinds of signs Jesus had already done, such as healings, driving out demons…Read the comment

The first part of the answer is given in Matthew alone (Mt 16:2, 3): "He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather; for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day: for the sky is red and lowering [sullen, gloomy]. Hypocrites! ye can discern the face of the…Read the comment
