Context of Mark 13:5
3After that, Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives. He could look across the valley at the temple. Peter, James, John and Andrew went together to talk with him. The crowd was not there. 4They said to Jesus, ‘Please tell us when all these things will happen. What will show us that they will soon happen?’ Jesus began to say to them, ‘Be careful! Some people will tell you things that are not true. Do not believe those people. 6Many people will say that they have come on my behalf. They will say, “I am the Messiah!” and they will deceive many people. 7You will hear about wars. And there will be reports about wars in other places. Do not be afraid. Those things must happen, but that is not yet the end of everything.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences. When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to ourselves. And the disciples of Christ, if it be not their own fault, may enjoy holy security and peace of mind, when all around is in disorder. But they must take heed that they are not drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6Jesus warned his followers not to be deceived by false messiahs. Many people would come claiming, ‘I am He,’ and would lead many others astray. These people claimed either to be the long-awaited Jewish Messiah or to speak with the Messiah’s authority. Some examples include Theudas the Galilean (Acts 5:36), Simon, the son of Gioras, and John of Gischala, who tricked many people in the AD 60s.Read the comment
