Context of Luke 1:26
24Soon, a baby was growing inside his wife Elizabeth. She stayed in her house for five months. 25‘The Lord has now given me a baby,’ she said. ‘He has been kind to me. Because of this, other people cannot say bad things about me now.’ When Elizabeth's baby had grown inside her for nearly six months, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth. Nazareth is a town in Galilee. 27Gabriel went there to visit a young woman. Her name was Mary. She had never had sex with anyone. She had promised to marry a man called Joseph. He belonged to the family of King David. 28Gabriel went to Mary and said, ‘Hello, Mary. The Lord God loves you very much. He is very near to you.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26A city of Galilee - As Joseph and Mary were both of the family of David, the patrimonial estate of which lay in Bethlehem, it seems as if the family residence should have been in that city, and not in Nazareth; for we find that, even after the return from the captivity, the several families went to reside in those cities to which they originally belonged. See Nehemiah 11:3. But it is probable that the holy family removed to Galilee for fear of exciting…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-38Verses 26-38 We have here an account of the mother of our Lord; though we are not to pray to her, yet we ought to praise God for her. This wondrous salutation and appearance troubled Mary. The angel then assured her that she had found favour with God, and would…Read the comment
