Context of John 21:12

10Jesus said to them, ‘Bring here some of the fish that you have just caught.’ 11Simon Peter got back into the boat and he pulled the net onto the shore. It was full of 153 big fish. There were so many fish, but the net had not broken. Jesus said to them, ‘Come here and eat breakfast.’ None of the disciples was brave enough to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ They knew that it was the Lord. 13So Jesus took the bread and he gave it to them. Then he did the same with the fish. 14After Jesus died and became alive again, this was now the third time that he showed himself to his disciples.

Commentaries on John 21:12

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12Come and dine - Ϛ . Though this is the literal translation of the word, yet it must be observed that it was not dinner time, being as yet early in the morning, John 21:4; but Kypke has largely shown that the original word is used by Homer, Xenophon, and Plutarch, to signify breakfast, or any early meal, as well as what we term dinner. It might perhaps appear singular, otherwise it would be as agreeable to the use of the Greek word, to have translated it…Read the comment

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-13None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You?”: Jesus looked different after God raised him from the dead. After his resurrection, Jesus was truly the same person. Yet his body was transformed and not limited in the same way. When he gave them bread and fish, their doubts disappeared (compare 6:11; Luke 24:30).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 12-1412-14. none ... durst ask him, Who art thou, knowing it was the Lord--implying that they would have liked Him just to say, "It is I"; but having such convincing evidence they were afraid of being "upbraided for their unbelief and hardness of heart" if they ventured to put the question.Read the comment
