Context of John 19:10
8When Pilate heard that, he was even more afraid. 9He went back into the house. He asked Jesus, ‘Where are you really from?’ But Jesus did not answer him. Pilate said to him, ‘Are you refusing to speak to me? Remember that I have authority. I can let you go free, or I can let them kill you on a cross.’ 11Jesus answered, ‘You could have no power against me unless God had given it to you. So the man who sold me to you has done a worse thing than you have done.’ 12From that moment, Pilate tried to let Jesus go free. But the Jewish leaders shouted back, ‘If you let him go, you are not Caesar's friend. Nobody should say that he himself is a king. That shows that he is against Caesar!’

Commentaries on John 19:10
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10Speakest thou not - This is the expression of a man of pride. He was not accustomed to be met with silence like this. He endeavored, therefore, to address the fears of Jesus, and to appall him with the declaration that his life was at his disposal, and that his safety depended on his favor. This arrogance called forth the reply of the Savior, and he told him that he had no power except what was given him from above. Jesus was not, therefore, to be…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-11You would have no authority over Me: Pilate had the power to crucify Jesus, but only because God gave him this temporary power. He allowed Pilate to have this power so that Jesus could advance toward the cross (see 10:18).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 8-118-11. When Pilate ... heard this saying, he was the more afraid--the name "Son of God," the lofty sense evidently attached to it by His Jewish accusers, the dialogue he had already held with Him, and the dream of his wife (Mt 27:19), all working together in the breast of the wretched man.Read the comment
