Context of Jeremiah 50:22
20At that time, I will forgive the sins of my people. I have let a few people of Israel and Judah remain. And they will no longer be guilty of any sins.’ That is what the Lord says. 21The Lord says, ‘Attack the land of Merathaim. Attack the people who live in Pekod. Run after them! Kill them! Completely destroy them! Do everything that I have commanded you to do. There is a noise of war in the land of Babylonia. The enemy is destroying everything! 23Babylon attacked other nations of the world, like a hammer that breaks things into pieces. But now that hammer has broken into pieces. Now the other nations see that Babylon is a disgusting place. 24Babylon, I put a trap to catch you, and you did not know about it. Now I have caught you in my trap, because you fought against me.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-32Verses 21-32 The forces are mustered and empowered to destroy Babylon. Let them do what God demands, and they shall bring to pass what he threatens. The pride of men's hearts sets God against them, and ripens them apace for ruin. Babylon's pride must be her ruin; she has been proud against the Holy One of Israel; who can keep those up whom God will throw down?Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-46After the predictions of judgment to be inflicted on other nations by Babylon, follows this one against Babylon itself, the longest prophecy, consisting of one hundred verses.
