Context of Ephesians 3:17
15Every family, those in heaven and those on earth, receives its true name from him. 16I pray that God will cause you to be strong in your spirits. God has great and valuable things in heaven to help you. I pray that God's Spirit will help you with God's own power. I pray that Christ will make his home in you, as you believe in him. Then you will know God's love very well. You will be like trees that have roots which go down deep into God's love. That will make you strong. 18Then you will understand, with all God's people, how much Christ loves us. That love is very wide and long and high and deep! 19Christ's love for us is so great that nobody can ever completely know it. As you understand this more and more, God's own nature will completely fill you.

Commentaries on Ephesians 3:17
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith - In this as well as in many other passages, and particularly that in Ephesians 2:21; (note), the apostle compares the body or Church of true believers to a temple, which, like that of Solomon, is built up to be a habitation of God through the Spirit. Here, as Solomon did at the dedication of the temple at Jerusalem, 2 Chronicles 6:1, etc., Paul, having considered the Church at Ephesus completely formed, as to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith - see the notes, Ephesians 2:22. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-19Verses 13-19 The apostle seems to be more anxious lest the believers should be discouraged and faint upon his tribulations, than for what he himself had to bear. He asks for spiritual blessings, which are the best blessings. Strength from the Spirit of God in the inner man; strength in the soul; the strength of faith, to serve God, and to do our duty. If the law of Christ is written in our hearts, and the love of Christ is shed abroad there, then Christ…Read the comment

Where the Spirit is there Christ is (Joh 14:16, 18). by faith--Greek, "through faith," which opens the door of the heart to Jesus (Joh 3:20). It is not enough that He be on the tongue, or flit through the brain: the heart is His proper seat [Calvin]. "You being rooted and grounded in love" (compare Ep 3:19), is in the Greek connected with this clause, not with the clause, "that ye may be able…Read the comment
