Context of 2 Thessalonians 1:6
4As a result, we are proud to tell believers in other churches about you. We tell them how you continue to trust God in your many troubles. You are patient and brave, even when people cause you to have much pain. 5This shows us that God judges people in a way that is right. Now you are receiving much trouble because you belong to God's kingdom. This shows that God accepts you as the people that he rules. God will punish those people who are causing trouble for you. He will cause trouble for them. That is right and fair. 7God will also do what is right and fair for you. You have troubles now. But one day God will cause you to have rest, together with us. That will happen when the Lord Jesus comes down from heaven. He will come with his powerful angels, 8and with a very hot fire. He will punish those people who do not know God. Yes, he will punish those people who do not obey the good news about our Lord Jesus.

Commentaries on 2 Thessalonians 1:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Seeing it is a righteous thing - Though God neither rewards nor punishes in this life in a general way, yet he often gives proofs of his displeasure, especially against those who persecute his followers. They, therefore, who have given you tribulation, shall have tribulation in recompense.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you - The sense is: “There will be a future judgment, because it is proper that God should punish those who now persecute you. It is not right that they should go unpunished, and triumph forever. It is not an arbitrary thing, a thing which is indifferent, a thing which may or may not be done; it is a just and proper thing that the wicked should be punished.” The…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-10Verses 5-10 Religion, if worth anything, is worth every thing; and those have no religion, or none worth having, or know not how to value it, cannot find their hearts to suffer for it. We cannot by all our sufferings, any more than by our services, merit heaven; but by our patience under sufferings, we are prepared for the promised joy. Nothing more strongly marks a man for eternal ruin, than a spirit of persecution and enmity to the name and people of…Read the comment

This had become worse since his first letter (1 Thessalonians 1:6; 2:14; 3:3–4). God will ease their suffering and judge those who persecute the church (2 Thessalonians 1:5–10).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. seeing it is a righteous thing--This justifies the assertion above of there being a "righteous judgment" (2Th 1:5), namely, "seeing that it is (literally, 'if at least,' 'if at all events it is') a righteous thing with (that is, in the estimation of) God" (which, as we all feel, it certainly is). Our own innate feeling of what is just, in this confirms what is revealed. recompense--requite in kind, namely, tribulation to them that trouble you…Read the comment
