Context of 1 Corinthians 9:14
12You agree to help other people who teach God's message to you. So surely we should receive even more help from you! But Barnabas and I have not used our authority to make you help us like that. Instead, we accept all these difficult things patiently. We want the good news about Christ to go everywhere. We do not want to do anything that might stop it. 13Think about this: The people who work in the temple get their food from that place. The priests who offer sacrifices on the altar receive part of the animals for themselves. In the same way, the people who tell God's good news to others should receive what they need to live. They should receive it from the people who hear the good news from them. 15But I have not used my authority as an apostle to demand these things from you. And I am not writing this letter to demand that you help me now. No! It would be better for me to die than to change the way that I live. I can be proud of that and nobody should stop me. 16I tell God's good news to people. But I have no reason to be proud because of that. It is something that I have to do. If I did not tell the good news, it would bring me great trouble.

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 9:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Even so hath the Lord ordained - This is evidently a reference to our Lord's ordination, Matthew 10:10; : The workman is worthy of his meat. And Luke 10:7; : For the laborer is worthy of his hire. And in both places it is the preacher of the Gospel of whom he is speaking. It was a maxim among the Jews, "that the inhabitants of a town where a wise man had made his abode should support him, because he had forsaken the world and its pleasures to study those…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Even so - In the same manner, and for the same reasons. Hath the Lord ordained - Hath the Lord appointed, commanded, “arranged” that it should be so ( ́ dietaxe). The word here means that he has made this a law, or has required it. The word “Lord” here doubtless refers to the Lord Jesus, who has sent forth his ministers to labor in the great harvest of the world. That they which preach the gospel - They who are sent forth by him; who devote their lives to…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. Even so--The only inference to be drawn from this passage is, not that the Christian ministry is of a sacrificial character as the Jewish priesthood, but simply, that as the latter was supported by the contributions of the people, so should the former. The stipends of the clergy were at first from voluntary offerings at the Lord's Supper. At the love-feast preceding it every believer, according to his ability, offered a gift; and when the expense of…Read the comment
