Context of 1 Corinthians 5:1
We have heard bad news about what is happening among you. Some of you are having sex in wrong ways. We have heard that one man is even having sex with his own father's wife! Even people who do not know God do not do things as bad as that! 2But, you are still proud of yourselves! Instead, you ought to be very sad and ashamed. You should have sent this man away from your group. 3My body is not there with you, but my spirit is with you. It seems like I am present with you. So I have already decided about this man. This is how you should punish him for what he has done.

If one of your own group does things like that, do not even agree to eat a meal with them.

Men who have sex with other men.
- Acts 15:20Instead of that, we should write a letter to tell them how to live as believers. We should say to them, “Do not eat any food which people have given to their idols. Do not eat anything that still has blood in it.”
- 2 Corinthians 12:21I am afraid that I may be very sad when I come back to you. My God may cause me to feel ashamed about you. Some of you may still be doing bad and disgusting things. If you have not turned away from those bad things, that will make me weep.

Do not want to have many things for yourselves. That shows that you worship those things as your idol.

All these people will go into the lake of fire that burns with sulphur. That is the second death for people.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1There is fornication among you - The word , which we translate fornication in this place, must be understood in its utmost latitude of meaning, as implying all kinds of impurity; for, that the Corinthians were notoriously guilty of every species of irregularity and debauch, we have already seen; and it is not likely that in speaking on this subject, in reference to a people so very notorious, he would refer to only one species of impurity, and that not…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1The apostle blames the Corinthians for connivance at an incestuous person; (1-8) and directs their behaviour towards those guilty of scandalous crimes. (9-13) Verses 1-8 The apostle notices a flagrant abuse, winked at by the Corinthians. Party spirit, and a false notion of Christian liberty, seem to have saved the offender from censure. Grievous indeed is it that crimes should sometimes be committed by professors of the gospel, of which even heathens…Read the comment
