Context of Matthew 26:29
27And having taken [the] cup and given thanks, he gave [it] to them, saying, Drink ye all of it. 28For this is my blood, that of the [new] covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins. But I say to you, that I will not at all drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father. 30And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives. 31Then saith Jesus to them, All ye shall be offended in me during this night. For it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine - These words seem to intimate no more than this: We shall not have another opportunity of eating this bread and drinking this wine together; as in a few hours my crucifixion shall take place. Until that day when I drink it new with you - That is, I shall no more drink of the produce of the vine with you; but shall drink new wine - wine of a widely different nature from this - a wine which the kingdom…Read the comment

Matthew 26:26 As they were eating - As they were eating the paschal supper, near the close of the meal. Luke adds that he said, just before instituting the sacramental supper, “With desire have I desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.” This is a Hebrew manner of expression, signifying “I have greatly desired.” He had desired it, doubtless: (1)that he might…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-30Verses 26-30 This ordinance of the Lord's supper is to us the passover supper, by which we commemorate a much greater deliverance than that of Israel out of Egypt. Take, eat; accept of Christ as he is offered to you; receive the atonement, approve of it, submit to his grace and his government. Meat looked upon, be the dish ever so well garnished, will not nourish; it must be fed upon: so must the doctrine of Christ. This is my body; that is, spiritually…Read the comment
