Context of Psalms 4:7
5Offer sacrifices of righteousness, and confide in Jehovah. 6Many say, Who shall cause us to see good? Lift up upon us the light of thy countenance, O Jehovah. Thou hast put joy in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their new wine was in abundance. 8In peace will I both lay me down and sleep; for thou, Jehovah, alone makest me to dwell in safety.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Thou hast put gladness in my heart - Thou hast given my soul what it wanted and wished for. I find now a happiness which earthly things could not produce. I have peace of conscience, and joy in the Holy Ghost; such inward happiness as they cannot boast who have got the highest increase of corn and wine; those Two Things in the abundance of which many suppose happiness to be found. To corn and wine all the versions, except the Chaldee, add oil; for corn…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Thou hast put gladness in my heart - Thou hast made me happy, to wit, in the manner specified in Psalm 4:6. Many had sought happiness in other things; he had sought it in the favor of the Lord, and the Lord had given him a degree of happiness which they had never found in the most prosperous worldly condition. This happiness had its seat in the “heart,” and not in any external circumstances. All true happiness must have its seat there, for if the heart is…Read the comment

Lord, let us have thy favour, and let us know that we have it, we desire no more; let us be satisfied of thy loving-kindness, and will be satisfied with it. Many…Read the comment
