Context of Mark 10:46
44and whosoever would be first of you shall be bondman of all. 45For also the Son of man did not come to be ministered to, but to minister, and give his life a ransom for many. And they come to Jericho, and as he was going out from Jericho, and his disciples and a large crowd, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, the blind [man], sat by the wayside begging. 47And having heard that it was Jesus the Nazaraean, he began to cry out and to say, O Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me. 48And many rebuked him, that he might be silent; but he cried so much the more, Son of David, have mercy on me.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 46Blind Bartimeus - בר bar in Syriac signifies son. It appears that he was thus named because Timeus, Talmeus or Talmai, was the name of his father, and thus the son would be called Bar-talmeus, or Bartholomew. Some suppose ̔ , the son of Timeus, to be an interpolation. Bartimeus the son of Timeus, ̔ , The blind man. It was because he was the most remarkable that this evangelist mentions him by name, as a person probably well known in those parts.Read the comment

The gracious calls Christ gives us to come to him, encourage our hope, that if we come to him we shall have what we come for. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 46they came to Jericho: The journey Jesus began in 10:1 was nearing its end. Jericho was the last major city in the Jordan River Valley before Jerusalem. It may be the oldest continuously occupied city in the world. In the time of Jesus, it was no longer located on the much smaller site of Old Testament times (Tell es-Sultan). It had been moved and become much larger. The road from Jericho to Jerusalem was steep, with an elevation change of about 1,000…Read the comment
