Context of Luke 9:44
42But as he was yet coming, the demon tore him and dragged him all together. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child and gave him back to his father. 43And all were astonished at the glorious greatness of God. And as all wondered at all the things which [Jesus] did, he said to his disciples, Do ye let these words sink into your ears. For the Son of man is about to be delivered into men's hands. 45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them that they should not perceive it. And they feared to ask him concerning this saying. 46And a reasoning came in amongst them, who should be [the] greatest of them.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 44Let these sayings sink down into your ears - Or, put these words into your ears. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44Let these sayings - Probably this refers to the “sayings of the people,” who had seen his miracles, and who on that account had praised and glorified God. On that ground they had acknowledged him to be the Christ. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-50Verses 43-50 This prediction of Christ's sufferings was plain enough, but the disciples would not understand it, because it agreed not with their notions. A little child is the emblem by which Christ teaches us simplicity and humility. What greater honour can any man attain to in this world, than to be received by men as a messenger of God and Christ; and to have God and Christ own themselves received and welcomed in him!
