Context of Luke 9:44
42And as he was yet a coming, the demon dashed him down, and tare him grievously. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43And they were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marvelling at all the things which he did, he said unto his disciples, Let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men. 45But they understood not this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. 46And there arose a reasoning among them, which of them was the greatest.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 44Let these sayings sink down into your ears - Or, put these words into your ears. To other words, you may lend occasional attention, but to what concerns my sufferings and death you must ever listen. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44Let these sayings - Probably this refers to the “sayings of the people,” who had seen his miracles, and who on that account had praised and glorified God. On that ground they had acknowledged him to be the Christ. As if he had said, “I am about to die. “You” will then be disconsolate, and perhaps doubtful about my being the Christ. “Then” do you remember these miracles, and the confessions of the people - the evidence which I gave you that I was from…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-50Verses 43-50 This prediction of Christ's sufferings was plain enough, but the disciples would not understand it, because it agreed not with their notions. A little child is the emblem by which Christ teaches us simplicity and humility. What greater honour can any man attain to in this world, than to be received by men as a messenger of God and Christ; and to have God and Christ own themselves received and welcomed in him! If ever any society of Christians…Read the comment
